BFO Chamber Series – AAPI Heritage Month

    Cambridge, MA

    Cambridge Public Library (Lecture Hall)

    2:00 PM

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! To celebrate, the BFO performs special selections of chamber music that lift up the voices of AAPI performers and composers. We present this concert one day before the 100th anniversary of President Coolidge’s decision to sign the Immigration Act, which included the Asian Exclusion Act. Together we shine a light on local AAPI voices, including guest appearances with several local AAPI authors and researchers. Here, you’ll learn the names of AAPI composers and authors, and explore beautiful and thought-provoking compositions that you may have never heard before!

A Second Heart: Novelists on the Pull of the Past

    Boston, MA

Boston Architectural College - Cascieri Hall

    11:15am EDT

In his novel The Sea, John Banville writes, “The past beats inside me like a second heart.” Like psychoanalysts, fiction writers mine the past to explore how historical and familial legacies influence their characters’ present day lives. Compelling fictional characters have believable and compelling histories. For those writing historical fiction, providing a past for characters offers a particular set of gifts and challenges. But how do you go about creating layered back stories for figures who aren’t real (though they may be inspired by real people)? Can you overburden your characters with their pasts? A panel of novelists will give concrete examples from their own work and discuss how history—whether personal or interpersonal, national or global—informs character in fiction. Moderated by Margot Livesy
